Cattless downpipes and CEL light?

I purchased a set of downpipes and will install them in the next few weeks. I am interested in all of the options that I have to trick the ECU so I can pass emission testing in NC.

NC hooks their maching up to the OBD to test emissions. No sniff test.

I have a Cobb tune so the CEL light will be on with their tune until Stage 2 is released. However, I still want to be able to revert the tune back to stock and not see the CEL light.

So, what are my options?

Remove the DP's.

When a DP fix is installed, at least in the case of the BMS fix, the fix will prohibit the OBD scanner from connecting unless the fix is being bypassed. So if the DP's are installed, you will have a CEL.

I thought that was the purpose of the 02 simulator. Delete the codes so it will read properly.

As long as the DPs are on, there will be codes. If there is anything installed to delete the codes, the OBD scanner will not be able to connect.

The Burger DP fix will NOT interfere with the OBDII readiness tests. It is an O2 sensor modifier and not an O2 sensor simulator. The difference is:

O2 sensor simulator= No O2 sensor actually present. Device mimics an O2 sensor.

O2 sensor modifier = O2 sensor still present, but signal is modified so the ECU does not throw codes.

Think of it as the difference between a piggy back vs. full stand alone.

Thanks for the info on this. I guess that I need to buy the Burger DP fix and that will solve my problem.

Not really true. It took me about 15-20 minutes of highway driving for mine to pop up, but then I deleted it and set auto code clear on my jb4.

I've had catless dps on my car with cobb for about two months now and still haven't thrown a code. Don't ask me how cus I have no clue, must be magic.

The longest I drove on the highway was 15 minutes yesterday, with no issues.

even 15-20 minutes is a longer-than-usual timeframe. if it hasn't thrown a code after 2 days, theres a reason. generally you'll get a code within the first few minutes of starting the car.

Maybe Cobb is already coded to supress the CEL light and we do not know it.

Did you check the codes on the Cobb unit to see if you are throwing any?

You will most likely throw at P0420 code (cat efficiency below threshold) after your car completes the OBD readiness test. It does not happen immediately, it will take at LEAST one drive cycle with the car at steady state cruise so the ECU can go into closed loop operation.

A very small minority of cars can run catless without throwing codes. It is indefinite of if/when you'll pop a code. Could be a few days, weeks, or months. There is variability built into cars, not every car is exactly the same, environmental conditions are different, and drivers are different.

Bogart, you could be this statistical outlier, or you might get it this Thursday at 7:21PM, mountain standard time, and if the Miami heat score 25 points in the first quarter. LOL

I beat the piss out of my car every time I drive it, taken it to the drag strip, drove a few thousand miles, still no code, only code I'm throwing is p2fa3. I'm sure it will happen sooner or later though.

I installed a cattless DP with an O2 spacer the other day and haven't thrown any codes or got a CEL. Probably speaking too soon

wow... i'm really surprised with the variability here! in other bmw models (at least in my experience), they pick up quite quickly.

Yup, took awhile though... I think I put on ~20 miles after the install before it popped up. I've been clearing it when it does come up and it doesn't come back right away, takes at least 15-20 miles I'd say...
