1M Clutch

I'm trying to determine what aftermarket clutches could be installed in the 1M.

Mine is fine, but given its track use, I'm planning ahead.

I haven't yet checked parts numbers, but my understanding is that our clutch is same as the 335is (and, perhaps, the Z4 version) except that we have a lighter flywheel.

And, I believe that our tranny is the same as the one installed in the 135i.

Would appreciate any information about the differences between our 1M and other N54-motored models that might affect which clutches could be installed.

The 1M has the very same trans as a N55, 6MT does(2011's and up).


I would think that SACHS would make a sport clutch(sportkupplung).

This is all very helpful. Interesting then that we have a mix of N54 and N55 pieces.

I remain curious as to the specific hardware differences and their interchangeability among models.

BTW, I'm aware that Sachs Race Engineering (SRE) makes some very good stuff, including the pressure plate used in HPF's highly regarded "feramic" clutches.

Unfortunately, SRE -- the motorsports unit of original equipment manufacturer giant Sachs -- does not have a U.S. distributor.

My understanding is that SRE has both a stage 1 and stage 2 pressure plate that not only has significantly greater clamping force but that also has reinforced straps -- the latter useful for withstanding damage from an inartful downshift on a road race course.

Are you sure, pretty sure I saw the spec of the 1M flywheel being lighter (hence faster revs)

Different fly wheel, but same N55 gearbox

Yes, the 1M has a lighter flywheel.

What I said was that the transmission is the same as a N55 unit.

OK, just compared part numbers and this is what I've learned.

The 1M has the same clutch disk as the 135i.

The pressure plate is, presumably, nearly identical to both the 135i and the 335is as only the last two numbers are different. The last three part numbers are: 250 (1M), 249 (135i) and 248 (335is).

The 1M flywheel is not shared by any other models. It's weight is listed as 25.13 lbs. Two different flywheels are listed for the 135i -- one 27.87 lbs and the other 29.51 lbs. Two different flywheels are also listed for the 335is -- one 28.37 lbs. and the other 30.18 lbs.
