2011 128i ipod USB compatibility

I finally got around to attaching my ipod mini 2nd generation to my ipod USB interface and i can't get it to show up in the audio console. The ipod mini powers up and just hangs at "do not disconnect". I tried the ipod mini in my sister's 2008 328xi ipod system and it plays perfectly. In addition I even tried her ipod touch in my 128i and it plays just fine.

Am I missing something obvious here like generation compatibility? I've read that control of the 2011 BMW model ipod interface was given to Apple for their ipod out feature. Would this complicate compatibility given the age of the ipod mini?

Any ideas?

I don't know if this helps, but I can't get my 30GB 5th generation iPod classic to work with my 2010 radio either. The same thing happens.

I'm using a amazon.com cheapie USB/3.5mm jack, but I don't think that is the problem.

I haven't tested this theory yet, but my iPod classic is formatted HFS+ (Apple) and not FAT (Windows).

I have a 3rd Gen 30gb iPod Photo that works flawlessly with my radio. Are you guys using the BMW ipod cable?

The only way I can get my BMW to use the iPod is to use the special BMW iPod cable which if you ask me SUCKS because it takes the aux in away. I use aux in for my satellite radio. In order to use both features I bought an 8GB usb flash drive, and loaded it with songs that I have in the iPod. It functions in exactly the same way as the iPod and the music quality is actually BETTER then using the iPod.

For the 2011 model I don't get the y adapter. I use my Apple USB cable to plug directly into the USB slot below the arm rest.

The crazy part about this is that the ipod is formatted for windows as fat, and I can play music from my USB stick from the same port no problem. There must be some handshake issue with the ipod and the car computer.

Do you think that BMW phased out the mini as an incompatible set? I was really hoping to put a 32GB CF in the mini and give me a sizeable music ipod jukebox.

I also found an old ipod nano with version 1.X.X firmware and that gives me the same error as the mini with version 1.4.1 firmware...

Having the same problem

My 2011 128i base stereo won't recognize my iphone 4s using the apple USB cord. I just bought the OEM USB BMW interface on Ebay for 11.00. Hopefully it works. I will let you know if it works.

My car can't find my phone book either

I'm sorry, I'm a newbie. They won't let me start a new thread until I post 3 replies so this seemed to be the most appropriate thread to ask my question too. I just bought my 2011 128i last week for 21,995 with 39,000 miles on it which I thought was a hell of a deal. I am having the same problem as this poster but as I said in an earlier reply, will try the official USB interface. My car displays the names and numbers on the stereo that are in my Iphone 4s, but the voice system says there are no names in my phone book when I try to use the voice activated system. Anybody know why this is?

Thanks!

How is the 128i in the rain

I know this is the wrong place for this question. I can't post new topics but promise I will as soon as I can. I traded in my AWD WRX for this awesome BMW and I am used to driving with real confidence in the snow. My first impression driving the BMW is it is not great on icy roads. Slid around the other morning triggering the track control and it held its own. But how is it in the rain with no icy conditions. Can drive it fairly confidently around curves and such on just wet roads? Thanks in advance and again sorry for posting this in the wrong place.
