DCT and when to shift?

I come from an old school of driving. I used to, when driving a manual transmission, shift when I thought the sound was just right. Not to many revs and not to few revs. I also adjusted carburetors this way.

Now when driving a DCT in Manual, either with the pedals or stick, should I continue this way or shift when I reach a certain number of RPM's? I know I should not go into the red but was wondering what your opinion would be.

Thanks for comments.

Well it seems that n54 seems to be best shifted between 6k-6.5 based off of dyno charts, after that the power drops off due to smaller turbos. Under casual driving, i personally shift at about 3k rpm because that feels right on my n52, on my fathers 335 i shift at about 2700-3000 as well. the turbo'd versions can be lugged more then the non turbos.

oops just realized you have an n55. I would say peak for n55 is 5500-6k but i have less knowledge on it compared to n54's.

Thank you for your response. This will help with my 325i.

Though i have noticed, when i'm driving a bit more spirited between 3-4k my shifts tend to be much smoother. I don't know if thats just because i'm more focused on shifting or because it's mechanically smoother. It's not very convenient to drive that way at all times though.

If I am running WOT the car is shifted at 6250. Regular DD about 2000/2500. If you want to mimic the factory DD shifts just drive away normally from a stop in "D" & see where the car shifts on its own. Copy that.

On a WOT run the shifts will hit harder then on a run with less throttle

dat FEEL.

for simple acceleration there isn't much reason to wind it out past 6k. turning complicates that a little.

for puttering around town just leave it in normal and let it save your gas.

if you haven't already, you'll get this motion down so mindlessly you'll be able to do it sleepwalking: pull the shifter toward you and push forward in one fluid motion. that's about when you begin playing around in traffic.
