Turbo kick @ 2500 RPM
Hi Guys,
Please forgive the noob questions. I am new to these turbo BMs. I test drove my first 135i today and noticed the car was not as smooth as I expected when accelerating. The car is a 2008 model with @ 50,000 kms. It seemed to me that around 2500 the turbos kick in noticeably. The car did not seem to be down on power or anything but it was not a smooth build up of power as the revs rose. Is this normal? Or does it need tuning? Please forgive my ignorance but I've not driven a lot of 6 cylinder turbos. I was expecting a power deliver similar to a normally aspirated engine? Thanks in advance. |

I bet the seller has a piggy back tune already on the car so it could be running around 13-14psi compared to the stock 8psi. These cars have a lot of torque especially when running a little more boost. Power does come on quite strong when the turbos spool up.

I have driven three of these cars and all three felt different, I'll be driving a forth next month with PPK so I'm guessing it will feel different again.

It almost felt like it is running out of steam and all of a sudden you get more boost.I had a ESS tune which gives a much more linear delivery of power. I suspect the example you were driving has a tune and not tuned very well.

My N55 has very smooth torque delivery. Torque feels like it gradually builds to 2000RPM and pretty constant for most of the rev range. It certainly isn't missing any bottom end torque. To me the top-end feels a bit of a disappointment by comparison.

If the car is not tuned, I think Dack is spot on. BMW's updated software flash introduced some serious lag below 2200-2500 rpm. In order to get the same response as before, you would need to double your throttle inputs. The PPK corrects this issue and gives you a very linear torque curve and immediate throttle response. The PPK is not the most powerful tune but power delivery is very predictable.

I'm not sure. Every car seems to respond a little different. A number of people have mentioned that both the Cobb and JB4 tend to surge a bit when the boost dials up. Some people claim that they don't experience any surge. That being said, the stage 2 Dinan and GIAC tunes seem to get the best reviews when it comes to smooth power delivery but they are not cheap and require a dealer to flash the ECU.

Any sort of tune that increases your power substantially should result in more 'surge' as you describe. This is simply because the turbos will take a bit longer to reach the higher boost level.

I drove an 09 model (stock, no mods) tonight and it was noticeably smoother. The seller tells me that the HPFP and the injectors were replaced as a precaution under warranty. He was not sure if they upgraded the ECU firmware or not.
