Giving up my 135i, but not saying goodbye!

I know that most of you will think I'm nuts, and laugh at my most likely plan for tomorrow, which is to trade in my 2008, 135i for a 2013 Cooper S roadster ( the deal may not be made, but it looks likely).... I have been working with Mini / BMW reps on this possible deal for a few months now... I seriously considered the 2013,135i, but I really want to try a roadster... the only experience with them was when I was 17 and my friend had a MGB.... so I guess it is sort of a life crisis ( not mid life since I am 65 years old)... I am experiencing some remorse over giving up the Bimmer....
I need a daily driver with some cargo space for my tennis bag , etc., and the Cooper S meets those needs: Z4, used Boxsters, even the Miata are not winter cars, and are not practical in any way... Being retired, there is also a $ issue.... I just want something completely different and fun!
I have been driving BMWs for 10 years, belonged to this forum for 5 years, and have been a BMWCA member for 8 years.... I plan to remain in this forum and may still participate; I will also stay in the club.....
The Cooper does have BMW DNA, and that makes me happy..
Again, I will not say goodbye. I have Bimmer blood and I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts, and posting ...
Best,
JoNack

Look again at the boxster. Plenty of space in the trunk and the frunk. As far as fun I personally say there is nothing out there at that price that compares. I really miss mine. Love the 1 but oh the boxster. My next purchase will be back to Porsche for me. The wife loves her z4 more then her mini s. good luck with whatever you decide and enjoy life.

i am a little prejudice to the Z4. you are right though it is not really a winter car but i know some that do drive them in the snow. maybe you can work through it and join me of on E89 forum

You're not nuts you want what you want. And it's your money no one else's so do what makes you happy. You only have 1 life and if you're already retired then you should be living it to the fullest. That includes doing weird crazy things no one else understands

jonack - congrats on your new car. I am sure you will enjoy it. You have to listen to your heart and not what other say/tell you. Follow your heart and dreams. Let us know your review of the MINI once you get it.

I read recently that Minis are even less reliable than Range Rovers.

I'll echo Bmwbreed: you want what you want, and that's good enough. Go for it. I work on MINIs and BMWs all day, every day. I have owned and lived with several MINIs, as well as a Boxster, Z3 (M Coupe), and BMWs. My prediction is that you'll be really happy with the roadster at first, but that you find, in the long term, that it's a bit chintzy and lacking in the massive soul that the early BMW MINIs had. If you're still flexible, consider a really good 2006 Supercharged MINI R53. They're just better drivers' cars. If you want more info, email me at Helix and I'll give you the lowdown.

Oh, and I do miss that Boxster...

Why not a 135 convertible?
I initially was looking at the Z4 for the same reasons you mentioned but I found the 135 to be fun, quick enough, have a relatively decent amount of storage space (if you add the trunk and back seat) and cheaper. I thought it was a pretty good compromise.

The MINI should be fun...though, if I had to be honest; seems slightly odd for the choice of your first roadster, but I'm sure you have your reasoning.

Just make sure you get one of these and all problems are solved...

Yes, I pulled the trigger!

Ordered a 2013 Cooper S Roadster...will be constructed in Oxford , England, and will be delivered in 6-8 weeks; my 2008, 135i, is the down payment (trade).
This was the most difficult automobile transaction that I have experienced. I do love the one...it had issues, but warranty covered them... I extended a power train warranty (big mistake.... made the same mistake twice.... DON'T buy extended warranty unless you plan to keep the car!)... The135i had about one year left to this warranty, so one could argue that I pulled the trigger too soon, but then there would be a devaluation , etc.
It all comes down to money and philosophy!!!! I got a tiny windfall 10 years ago, bought a 2003 3 series, traded it and bought the 2008, 135i...that's it , bank money gone, the value is now in the car. Two months ago my right tail riding light died. I had friends at a local garage fix it, but it is a led light, and had to be ordered from BMW.... the whole tail lamp had to be replaced: $350.00... Are you shitting me! I can't afford to run this car beyond warranty... any incurred maintenance cost will not be recovered. Period! If money is not an issue, than who cares!
I'm retired, on fixed income, so I care very much! I also want to experience a roadster somewhat similar to the English roadsters I bounced around in when I was a kid. Now, this vehicle has to meet some criteria: must be my daily driver (meaning NE winters / snow/ ice..), must have adequate cargo space to hold my large tennis bag; a platform that is relatively high, so I don't have to fall in; price; nice to have good gas mileage, too. Now, that eliminates: Porsche, Z cars, even the Miata.... Mini Cooper wins! I am not a Mini Cooper enthusiast ( I told them!) .... But, I am attracted to their roadster... so I went for it!
Best, JoNack

one more thing..

RWD is better than FWD.... but , I don't live in Arizona, Florida, California... and I have driven many FWD cars in the past, so this ( torque steer) will not be an issue for me... In fact, it will force me to be more alert, which is good when you are 65!!!!
