Trunk Leak, check your seals!

I thought about posting this under the maintenance section, but it is general warning for all. Somehow or another, the seal on my trunk developed an 'irregularity.' To my astonishment, 4 inches of rain collected in my battery compartment. Yikes! And low and behold, there are three major electronic components buried in the trunk. The Park Distance Control, TPMS, and another that escapes me at the moment. Who knows, maybe more. I keep my car under a carport or in a parking garage 99% of the time. I live in the Carolinas, so the car doesn't see extreme conditions other than some heat. I hand wash my car. One big thunderstorm is all it took. The dealership recreated the conditions with a garden hose and some time.

Considering they asked me if I had a cooler tip over or a bag of ice melt, I suspect they doubted my claim. I casually reminded them that you can't fit a cooler in trunk and they all nodded.

Needless to say, everything was covered under warranty. Thankfully. After August, this would have been a very pricey non-warranty expense. A couple thousand I suspect.

Monitor your trunk seals kids, especially if you don't have the extended warranty. And Happy Motoring

ps...sorry, no pics. you'll have to trust me.

FYI, I fit a cooler in mine. There is just no way in hell it could tip over since I have to jam it in there. haha.

seriously, though, thanks for the tip.

this kinda reminds me of the door seals. After a good rain or snow, there is always water or snow/ice on the door sills when I open the door.

I have a 2012 128i.. I never keep anything that can contain fluids in the trunk.
I opened it up today and noticed everything was kind of damp. I removed the cover to reveal the battery and computer bays and found about 1 inch of water in the battery bay! What a pain in the ass. I'm going to bring this to the dealer and I do hope that they can reproduce this issue..

** edit: I should also note that my speakers sound like they are "popping"...

this always happens, after any wash, rain or whatnot I have moisture running down the windows, and covering them when rolling up and down the windows... I used to drive a hyundai which didn't seem to have this issue.

sorry for bringing up old thread...

I'm discovering water in trunk too after touchless washes (summer i hand wash and dry but in winter i have no choice but touchless pressure wash)

There are no puddles forming just the cargo mat is moist/wet as if it was splashed with water.
Can't seem to find culprit. Anyone think replacing weather stripping fix this?

Thanks,

^^^ I'm glad you did. Is your car a '12 MY? The post above you is a '12. This could be an issue for newer model vehicles.

Any other '12 or newer models experiencing this?

I'll have to keep an eye on my trunk...

Tks/B
