I've got the Helix, the design features are what sold me, stepped core with greater face area, bull nosed bars on the face near drop in fit, and the performance results of very low pressure drop and IAT temp drop are at the top of the list

If I've tried more intercoolers, I'd probably not give such a biased answer.

I have HPF.

BMW. It works well is under warranty and you don't have to cut up a rare car.

Unless your doing some hard core driving in extremely high temps I would say any one you opt to get will do the job. I just think the design of the helix is best.

I chose the Forge because of the craftsmanship, factory connectors, and overall material quality in Forge parts. I also did back to back dyno runs after installing one on my 135i and was impressed with the gains...12whp if I recall correctly on a car with only a BMW Perf flash. IATs were also materially lower as well.

The FMIC has also proven its worth during a few track days as well. I'm happy with the purchase, but I'm sure there are other quality units out there as well. The step design cores just never made sense to me - I don't understand how the awkward turbulence it creates wouldn't offset any benefit gained from additional cooling area. YMMV

It doesn't work well. It suffers heatsoak.... Just log the intake temps before and after switching FMICs to find out.

Most, like ETS, Forge, don't require cutting ang fully reversible back to stock

Wagner has very close to helix design it is made in Germany you don't have to cut anything it is black so it has stealth look.
But I would go with VRSF it is cheapest and it is 7 inch core thick.

And others will tell even more so I think You have to search and make your own decision find your arguments.

I was thinking about doing the Wagner or ETS 5", ER Charge Pipe OEM diverter valves, aFe Pro Dry S drop in filter + dynamic air scoops and a custom/dyno Cobb tune roughly $2.5k for all; maybe a BMS catch can in the future...

I am just worried about voiding the warranty with those upgrades...

Your biggest issue is going to be the charge pipe id guess

I don't think you will have many issues, becuase those mods are equally compatible with the oem tune as the cobb can be removed

I will have my powdercoated Wagner for sale soon, so feel free to pm me if you are interested. Much cheaper than the new prices.

Seems like a good list but I'd pass on these scoops.

Ian, despite the fact that I find nachob's post not only amusing (really so) but also quite right for people whose cars are with factory tune, do not track (or very rarely do) and live in relatively mild or simply cooler climates; I tend to go with what you say here but I have a few questions:

I would like to know if ETS that you have in your car and which is 100 % reversable and real bolt-on according to all reports, also covers the following well vs. the stock unit:

- stock is extremely light and helps the car's almost perfect weight balance, is there any noticeable weight difference between stock and ETS (which must be among the lighter options of aftermarket ICs)?

- lag/throttle response is of fundamental concern for me, stock IC might be POS for most people but as long as it does the job it also seems to be great for minimal lag due to its small size. So what about ETS? Is there any negative (or positive) difference in this field that you noticed after you installed the ETS, especially without M button pressed?
