Rattly Dash...... gone.

In case this is helpful to anyone, since I bought the car, it's sounded like a rattle was present somewhere in the dash. I've been a bit lazy to do anything about it since I thought I'd have to remove much of the dash to find it.

Well I made an effort to seek it out and it turned out to be the A Pillar trims which were making an indecent squeak every time I hit a bump. They were both noisy with the rubbing on the dash where they met.

I removed both A pillar trims and covered any plastic parts which touched the dash with a wax type lube and the car is wonderfully quiet now.

So in case anyone has a similar concern, it may be this which is causing the incessant creaking.

Hope it helps.

In case you want to try it, just briefly, the steps are as follows:

1 - use thin flat head drive to pry out Airbag badge on 'A' pillar

2 - unscrew Hex head under badge

3 - Slide trim along the same axis as the pillar toward the roof to unlock the hooks behind.

4 - Lube

5 - Put back in reverse order

6 - Eat cake

You're welcome.

I only did #6.
Because I don't have a rattle.

Thanks for sharing though.

Was your rattle in a specific spot? I have a rattle/ noise thing coming directly behind the driver instrument cluster whenever I hit a bump or pothole. I wonder if this trick would work on my dash.

thanks,

Yeah to honest, my number 6 came before number 1.......... but I still ended with number 6.

And my rattles were all around the dash area, the point here was that it sounded like rattles rather than squeaks, but they were in fact created by rubbing.

The thing is so much nicer to use now. Feels tight and high quality.

Used the rest of the unused wax in my hair, look stupid now.

What brand of lube did you use? I am struggling to find something that seems right for the application. Thanks.

Great write up!! Some people put padded weather stripping between the A-pillar and dash and that also stopped the dash from creaking and knocking..

GREAT Post OP. Thanks 10000x.

I've had this annoying noise every time I hit a bump. I assumed it was where the windshield met with the car. I never brought it up with the dealer because I thought they would rip out the entire dash and create more creaking.

I followed your advise and it's night and day difference. I used a synthetic wax designed for pulling cables through interior walls. Home Depot.

OP: Did you have this issue on the driver pillar too? I'm wondering if I should go back and do the driver side too. This totally fixed my issue.

I didn't have much noise from the drivers side, but I did it also before it started. But now I have something from the rear passenger side trim somewhere.... everytime I drive off, it creaks, then when I come to a stop, it goes back. something's moving with the weight of the car. .. argg... lucky this thing is amazing to drive.

Mate, I had the problem you just mentioned.

My dealer fixed it under warranty. They diagnosed it as seam creaking. They had to remove the interior trim and the left rear window to get to the problem. BMW Australia knew exactly what the problem was as soon as my service advisor discussed the issue with them.

Here's a pic I took, the solution was to put new high tensile rivets along the seam where I placed the red dots. No lube is going to fix this one.

Hope this helps you sort yours out. The creaking was so annoying to me so I know how you feel.

1MOz you absolute legend!!

It seemed to be trim initially and I went over everything and it wouldn't stop. There are some noises that don't bother me but this one is killing me.

Thanks so much for this, I'll take it in and get them to sort it. Brilliant. Ta bud.

No problem. Always good to be able to help a forum member. PM me if you want more details. It's like walking on a freaking timber floor when the car makes a move and coming to a stop (at slow speed).
