Tin can dragging noise from right hand side rear disc

I have an intermittent noise coming from the rear right hand side disc brake. It only happens when the car is cold and at very low speeds. Let the handbrake off and turn hard right seems to bring it out and it Sounds like a tin can ping ping noise as if it is being dragged behind the car. Anybody else had this, sounds awful when it does it

Just recently began experience a similar thing. Most prominent first drive of the day pulling out of my garage slowly, and then slowly while turning out of my apt complex. I wouldnt say its major and the car performs fine everyday but its a little more concerning to me than some 'diff chatter

Sounds like the infamous "cow bell" noise.

Exactly, I agree 100% I don't think it is diff chatter. Not a noise I want to hear from the 1M

I had that and it was pebble stuck between brake disk and splash shield in rear. Take wood stick and hit bottom of dust shield in garage and see if pebble falls out. It happened to me 5 or 6 times!

Thanks Dack, just found it on M3 forum and that is exactly the noise. Can't seem to find the solution but I will talk to the dealer tomorrow.

Thanks

Crazy....this happened to me just a few hours ago. I pulled over and couldn't see anything. Concerned, I turned around to head back home and it stopped. It happened after rolling through a street with new asphalt where pebbles kicked up. Glad I'm not the only one.

This is to much of a common issue to be a rock caught in the disc! I've seen it on 2 1ms, and multiple e92 m3s, doesn't sound like a diff noise (chatter) but after doing an oil change, noise never reoccurs. The 'NEW' oil should have special FM booster in it for this reason. This also occurred with e46 m3s. There is a BMW PUMA case on this issue.

As I understand it, this is coming from the E brake mechanism. I have had it and I find the problem goes away if I give a swift firm tug when applying the E brake. Problem has been solved doing this!

I seem to recall the manual stating something like " occasionally apply the brakes in the manner for which they were designed ( or intended )".
Perhaps you need to do a few high speed hard stops.

Mine had it about a year ago. Horrible noise, causes people to turn and stare it is that loud. Stops above about 5 mph.
Dealer adjusted the handbrake and it hasn't reoccurred. I got them to check between the disc and the splash shield for rocks but they found nothing.

All I do is reach through the wheel (or around it), pull in on the brake shield and let it go, causing it to vibrate loose whatever is pinging around in it. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries, but it is the quickest solution I have found, after pulling the wheel off a couple of times early on.

It is kind of embarrassing to have such a cool car go clinking around the corner sometimes.

Thanks for all the comments and advice. The car is due to go to the dealer and I will get them to check the brakes etc as part of that visit.

i have got the same issue - it comes and goes

especially embarassing if you are just cruising the maximilian straße in munich and your car sounds like something is broken next to all the hot chicks as it happened last week

ditto to all the above, I've had this issue and it still comes back once in a while then goes away by itself. I suspect either the gravel or e-brake theories. My issue usually occurred while reversing below 5mph - the tin can syndrome.

Same here. Lends credence to the pebble theory.

we nornally get ten runs on a concrete aggregate lot that has a fair amount of pebbles... Suddenly pulling up to the line in say.. run three I hear the cowbell.... there is no doubt in my mind

Nothing to say that there cannot be other causes.. but I have cleared pebbles out of the heatshield and that reslolved the issue.
Sometimes backing up and stopping rapidly will clear them but oftentimes not....
