castrol edge ll-04 oil

I was at the dealership today and scheduled my first oil change. When I asked what oil I need to purchase, it was stated that castrol edge 0w-30 ll-04 was what is needed. My question is why did BMW say to use the ll-04 when every post I see says only use the ll-01. Car is US spec 2012 135i located in Germany.

Because you are using German gas, which means using LL-04. LL-01 is for us North Americans using crappy fuel.

Additionally to what MightMouse said, LL-04 is a low SAPS/mid SAPS oil, so it has a lower starting TBN. The lower sulphur fuel in Germany allows the use of a lower SAPS oil, than the LL-01 requirement. Just remember to change your oil when you ship your car back to the US.

Garage List
Back to this oil talk, for the N52, I currently just did my change with Mobil1 0w40. There are also castrol 0w40, 5w40, and 5w20 that are approved for bmw LL01. Which oils are actually "good" for the N52 engine?

Castrol 0W-40 and Mobil 1 0W-40 are both excellent oils for the N52. Could probably just flip a coin, or choose the less expensive of the two. 5W-20 will not work at all and there is no LL-01 approved 5W-20 oil (I think you mean 5W-30).
