335I Automatic Transmission Cooler Install Question

Hey guys, I've been seriously thinking about putting in an ATF cooler, because i want to lessen water temp limp modes at the track, and help increase transmission longevity. The radiator is burdened with trans temps via the heat exchanger. I was wondering how difficult it would be to install this Universal ATF cooler: http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-M3-...05/PriceAlert/

How much custom work would be required? cutting, fabrication, etc...Any ideas?

Subscribed! That's pretty inexpensive too which makes me believe... it can't be that easy.

Oil coolers aren't supposed to be expensive. Its those who make custom kits for cars, and sell them on forums that are rapin'.

Did some more research guys, and it seems that the E46 3 series guys who are supercharged have slapped on similar trans coolers:

Im in this area messing around , my suction line from transmission oil cooler lines got worn from touching the crank wheel due to poor install job on crappy mechanic that worked on my car. No I try to figure out how to get the damaged line out in order to be able to install the new line when it arrives. But to install a separate cooler with fan dont seem like a stupid idea. The lines from cooling to AT could easily be extended and rerouted to new location where this universal cooler could be installed. The only "challenge" with this is to find a suitable source to get power to the fan from.

Anyone here changed the cooling line for AT ?

I have a 6MT now, but in previous automatic cars I've installed ATF coolers with relative ease. I don't know how the lines are on these cars but as long as you can mate the factory lines to a fitting or to the cooler, it should be a simple install. Only thing is try to get as much ATF into the cooler before you install it so you minimize the air in the system.

There ain't nothing simple about installing these lines since you need to either drill out your oil filter housing or replace it with the housing that has the fittings for the lines. This isn't easy because that housing sits right in front of the engine with not a lot of room.
I went with a total replacement BMW aux oil cooler just like the factory did because I keep my cars forever and I wanted my temps to stay reasonable.
I have my old housing which I could play around with and see if you can mod the housing for lines. I have seen it done but again not easy...

TINNSOLDATEN-where exactly is that line located because im having similar issues at the track and the car runs strong but goes into limp mode somewhat often? Did this fix the problems you werer having on the track? I had no idea that the trans can make the car into limp mode lol....wow

If one looks at the e92 M3 system you see that they use trans oil/water heater exchanger and aux radiator as well controlled by temp regulator. Some parts might be usefull as it seem that the heat exchange not only reject heat into the water but also rejects heat into the oil when the car is cold. Same applies to 335i as well for the heat exchanger. You can see this looking at the cooling diagram provided by BMW.
