I finally got around to doing this mod and there is a better way. It's much easier to pull out the whole vent to avoid breaking the clips, you just need to pull the side panel off to get access to release the vent.

I was installing the P3 gauge at the same time as doing the mod, so I followed the directions here:

And the whole vent came out, no risk of breaking the clips on the vent fascia.

(I then had to remove the fascia to install the P3 gauge and you really need to have the vent in your hands, not the car, to get access to the sides of the vent to properly release the fascia. I'm not surprised people have trouble just pulling up while the vent remains in the car).
