At one point I had a bad relay running to the PPK2 fan which caused the fan to run nonstop one night. In the morning my instrument panel lit up like a Christmas tree, and the battery was so low I couldn't check the codes. Out of pure luck I noticed the relay was warm. I immediately pulled the relay and unplugged the fan. Once the battery was charged, I checked the codes which showed a short circuit (forget the code number). I cleared the code and took a short trip without the fan connected. I didn't get a code, but I only drove a couple miles to see what kind of water temps I would see without the fan.
Out of curiosity, what kind of water temps are you seeing that is giving you cause for concern? What I have noticed is that the ECU allows the temps to run higher (say 212-218) when driving at a relatively constant speed around town. But if you jump on the throttle, the water temp actually drops (the oil temp may go up however). I'm pretty sure BMW has designed it this way, and that the water pump has as much to do with this as the radiator fan. I'm sure you are well aware that higher temps equal better emissions, and BMW's ECU is very keen on emissions.
