Mine were sticking up 1/4" and very noticeable. They were at a angle and aiming up like yours. With the hood closed the nozzle on my car needs about 3/4" more clearance. Since the last photo I've made the hood switch much smaller and shaped it to look better.
With the hood closed there is no hood open message. If I release the hood latch inside the car but not the safety latch I get the hood open message. Removed the plastic end cap from the hood sensor.
