The only way your trans might start to slip is IF you put the trans fluid down the clutch instead of inside the manual trans!
You are perfectly fine in changing your fluid - no matter the miles. I think your friend might also be thinking of a Automatic trans.
PS: Don't for get to also change the diff fluid as well( 75w140). I am now using Redline's MTL in my manual trans and I am quite happy with it. Thanks MightyMouseTech

I found the fluid starts just OK, but needs some miles to really feel great.
Also found recently, below freezing, the MTL really needs some warming up. Ah well, car going into storage tomorrow. We are expecting a big storm (20-40 cm if snow) starting Sunday night.
