I bought a 2011 135i 6MT with 29k miles in 2015 with the CarMax warranty. The coverage paid for itself in less than a year in the form of a number of run-of-the-mill repairs, like a failed water pump, worn control arm bushing, a tired starter and a few other things.

I'd personally shoot for the $150 deductible up to 100k miles. The $300 deductible might encourage you to defer repairs or maintenance, which negates the purpose of the service contract meaning the company wins and you lose. When I had the warranty, the deductible was per service visit as opposed to line item, so I had plenty covered during each trip to my mechanic's shop. Another plus was that my plan was valid at any ASE certified repair facility, which included my trusted independent BMW specialist. It was also transferable, which meant I got an above market price when I sold the car a few years later.

I personally wouldn't own one of these cars without some kind of warranty like this. I actually purchased another, similar contract for my current DCT 135i.

By the way, I just looked at the photos of the saved car. If you play your cards right, CarMax will replace the worn steering wheel trim, shift knob, and climate control button panel for free.

The figures you quoted equate to anywhere from 25% to 75% of the total outlay needed for the warranty, which will continue to cover repairs after it has paid for itself.
