The information in this thread made removal quite straightforward, it just took awhile because I was being careful.
Here are a couple of extra tips:
- The thing that gave me the most trouble actually was the side marker. I have a 1M and there is no spring to push against like some of the other cars. It turns out it is just held in by clips, so just squeeze and pull straight out, starting from the rear first. I have included a picture of the clips for those who need it.
- To get the headlamp washers to work, turn on the ignition fully, turn on the lights and the first time you pull the washer stalk it will spray the headlamps (but only the first time until you power down again)
In my case I think the washer fluid was just plain water, but I hardly ever use the washer so it must have been festering for awhile. All these years owning cars and I have never encountered this problem before! Now I know I need use up the fluid every now and then and top up with some additives that will kill algae!

I have had my 135i for 12 years, so far mine has only clogged up once but it is likely to happen again, I was the same with my previous car that I owned for 9 years and this one I never used the water bottle to clean the windscreen either as it makes the car dirty
I do clean the windscreen with the wipers every time I get in the car now though so it may prevent it happening again, I only drive about a 1000 miles a year so a lot of the time the car is not being used
