Fior anyone else reading this, there is a chance your transmission's heat exchanger thermostat is stuck and causing the transmission to overheat. (although I doubt this was the OP issue since he said it was erratic / happened when cold.) I have been chasing a similar issue for quite some time now and believe I have finally found the solution now that I understand how the cooling system works. The heat exchanger and thermostat are sold under a single part no and it is a pretty straightforward replacement.
