That brown bowl of air is pollution, something catalytic converters help lessen. In fact, even today in LA, the air coming out a modern exhaust is a little bet better on a bad day then what went in.
Something to think about, especially if everyone dumped their converters.

I enhaled the Detroit Michigan Green bowl of air many years ago. Ok, so our air is clean. The pollution created elseware is 10 times worse than what it cleans up in the USA and we live on the same plant.
Power and Industry are the major polluters of the world, not automobiles. Efficiency allone can outperform the benefits of CAT in the relm of the global environment. If you through global dimming into the equation you may understand what I am talking about.
So I say dump all the CATs, they cause more harm than good.
