I use one of the lower end Garmin unit (Nuvi 200 I think) and it works great. I travel all the time for work and bought it with that in mind, but I use it on trips even when I know the route now, just for the ETA feature and the ability to find whatever food I want along the route.

A unit that's $200+ should get you all the features you need right now, and they're worth every penny on a long trip.
