My normal approach too, however after more than a year of use, it's great stuff. Massively better than more boutique products, or useless products like Wheel Wax. Even holds up to track use pretty well and lets me clean the wheels on both cars with water and ONR, no need for wheel cleaner.
I've never had issues with it slinging either, but only use it when I can let it dry overnight.
