I did this exact same thing. My car would drive like shit and throw a code for VANOS, but not misfire codes. Once it threw the code, it would run fine (I assume because it stopped using VANOS).

The wire coming from the exhaust side of the head plugs into the intake solenoid, and the wire coming from the intake side of the head plugs into the exhaust solenoid. I just assumed the exhaust solenoid would use the wire from the exhaust side of the head. But you know what happens when you assume...
