I'm genuinely curious - I'd planned to buy in late September, or maybe early October from Tirerack (also because I expect the CAD to appreciate slightly between now and then). Is there a risk that Tirerack will be out of stock by late September? Or is that more of a concern with local tire shops?
Snow tires are typically made in one production run, then run out in the early winter. It's best to order early to guarantee you will get what you want. Tirerack shows availability of some late august, so September is the ideal time to order.

I can't really follow my own advice though, because my 1 won't arrive til mid-october, and I don't want to order rims and tires early and then by the time I can try and see if they fit, it's too late to return to tirerack.

I'd really prefer a set of Hakkapeliittas but their pricing for runflats are astronomical...$245 for 16's! I have them on my mini though (15" non-rft) and they are the best snow (plus dry + wet) tire I've ever driven.
