Interesting stuff. I looked at the Castrol website and it looks like the 0W-40 Syntec and EDGE both have the BMW LL-1 rating. It seems odd to me that BMW would recommend a 5W-30 weight when the car would last so much longer on a 0W-40 weight.
I'm guessing it has to do with cost?
