8.5" up front with a 40mm offset is fine, its just the 15mm adapter that is going to be the issue. You would have to run something like a 205 tire in order to not rub, and even then, it would be close. A lot of people cant fit more than a 225 wide tire without major camber (2.5*+) or a solid fender roll.

The "Perfect" offsets/widths for these cars is as follows:
Front: 8.5 wide with a 45mm offset
Rear: 9.5 wide with a 59mm offset

You "could" go with an e9X set of wheels, but the required fender work and lack of usable rubber just makes it look retarded IMO.

There is a 1er with E9X wheel offsets on it. No mention of tire size or fender work, but i would imagine its more than its worth. Sell the Evo/STI wheels and buy a proper fitted wheel setup.
