I just took off my performance exhaust and am waiting to put in the 135i muffler, so I got a very good, back to back comparison between:

Secondary cat delete + PE Exhaust
Secondary cat delete + muffler delete

The difference in tone and pitch is worlds apart. I’d say the volume between the two is basically the same, BUT the muffler delete is boomier with a lot more of the low frequency notes coming through. Puttering around town there’s definitely presence of exhaust but it’s droney/boomier. When you open it up wide open throttle it starts to sound nice above 4K. If you’re not WOT, it’s still a very low droney, boomy note.

The PE is a similar volume, but it controls drone so well in comparison and the tone, the pitch, is all so well refined. There is low tones in there but it’s tight and defined. There’s a rumble below 3.5k that’s throaty, with very very minimal drone and everything above 3.5k is a proper racey, slightly raspy, higher pitched climb up to 7k. When you let off the throttle there’s some overrun burbles that happen very quickly. It’s not obnoxious at all and I’ve always loved ‘em.

All these years using the PE and I’m still surprised at how good it sounds. I’m also surprised at how much of the drone is suppressed by the muffler on these cars.

Old sound clip of the PE that I never posted here:

I’ll see if I can get a sound clip of the muffler delete later this weekend.
