I removed the rear speaker grille and speaker to access the seat release cable then cut a notch out of the cable housing so I could grab the cable with very fine 'pliers' (I actually used a surgical clamp). This allowed me to climb into the boot, remove the catch trim and pop the catch with a screwdriver.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge can provide a smarter way- what I did was a major hassle but did get the job done.
