At risk of being a flip flopper, I have to agree. But they also have to stay in touch with the A3 ($33,800) and B200 Turbo ($35,400). Neither competitor has the power nor the looks of the 1er, and both are fwd, but both also come pretty well equipped and offer the practicality of a hatch.

The market isn't made up entirely of BMW enthusiasts, so even as good as the 1er may be in terms of performance, handling, etc. the majority of premuim compact buyers are going to look at the practical benefits of the Mercedes and the Audi, as well.

So I'd say $36K is realistically the maximum entry-level price for the 1er. A 128i at that price would be pushing $40K pretty quickly with sport and premium packages. Any more and it gets really close to the 135i, which, if at $42K, would start to look too good to pass up.

At $33K I think BMW would decimate the competition with this car...

I'm such a flip flopper.....
