My E70 X5d gets 16 city 26 highway (realized) and F15 gets 20/29 IIRC...I mean, that's a huge difference, a lot of it is attributed to the transmission and lower weight.
One thing for sure, diesels love high speed cruising...at times I can get 30 mpgs on my E70.

My MY15 X3 Diesel gets 38-44mpg on the highway, depending on how fast I want to set cruise control. It averages around 30mpg in the city!
