The bar you see in the pictures has a U shaped channel with slot cutouts on both sides. The slots were just large enough for the shaft to fit through so when the ball is inserted in the channel to bend, the stress points tend to be concentrated at locations outside of the channel away from the ball.

The metal shaft is also relatively soft so it's does not take a huge amount of force to bend given it's size.

I placed the original shift lever in the picture here but the sizing is not the same as the replacement shaft. The short shift shaft is slightly smaller in dia. and obviously longer between the ball and trans link attachment point so the one shown does not fit into the channel correctly.
