A standard 135i has around 10mm of exposed thread. It should be noted I am RHD, so LHD might be different, although the M3 tie rods are the same part number for both LHD and RHD
I'm not sure exactly, I had to get new ones since my stock ones were totally seized. I counted threads on the stock ones, set the new ones the same, then had some slight adjustment for the control arms, I don't remember how much but not more than a turn or two. I got it as close as I could with a tape measure to drive it to the alignment shop and it felt mostly fine.

The M3 knuckle is definitely a different part and the mount for the tie rod is definitely farther outboard than the 335/135 knuckle. I don't think there's any way the slight adjustment needed for the control arms is why the M3 tie rods are that much longer.
