Oh! And for the truly insane:
I just learned that the iPhone can put pauses in phone numbers. I'm sure other phones can do this too. It has to be a contact for this to work.
So go add a new contact called "BMW Status", and set its number to:
800-831-1117,,2,,<your production number>,,1
(or "...<your VIN>,,2"). You can get the commas in there by tapping the "+*#" button and then tapping "pause".
Now you can check your status with minimal effort. You can even hold the "Home" button to get to Voice Control and say "Call BMW Status".
Not that I've set this up or anything...
