Correct! #7 is NOT needed for 1M's or on N55's. Only for N54's do you need #7.

Have a few extra c-clips on hand bc they will fly off never to be seen again. They are cheap insurance to a hassle free DIY job!


Here are a few pics from an e36 shifter. Its really the same thing. I agree with Scott, getting that shifter bushing to rotate and off, is a bitch. Also... don't punch yourself in the eye when you pull UP on the shifter knob/boot. You laugh but people do knock themselves out when trying to remove that leather shift lever!

Here you can clearly see the notch where the shift lever bushing locks into that saddle carrier. You only need to rotate the bushing 90' counter clockwise to unlock it from the carrier.
