Theoretically it is supposed to work. From what you say though, it sounds like the computer controls the headlight voltage and the strobe effect could either be a bad/cheap ballast or the computer cutting it out because its not getting the proper readings or no reading from what the halogen system was giving it previously. HIDs you 35w vs the halogen 55w.

Have you tried just running straight power from a car battery to the headlights and test to see if they work and are solid?

I plan to retrofit a set of HID lights into my E30 projector ellipsoids and I will just be cutting/splicing wires as the system is just a simple, relayed, on/off circuit.
