If you were looking for a collectable BMW, it wouldn't be a 1M.
300 locally sold units of a 1M doesn't make it collectable, someone more across the M range pointed out a while back that the E92 M3 GTS was made in really low numbers circa 140-150 in total and around 25 RHD as was the E46 M3 CSL in RHD circa 500 units of 1200 WW. None of those are worth more than list price, you can buy a CSL for ~100 and it was $210k in 2003.
Those and the Evo E30 M3s (or M3r) would be worth money long term before the 1M. That's not to say the 1M isn't an awesome bit of kit, it is.
