If the trailer weighs more than 2,500 lbs or is used in interstate commerce you have to get a plate. If it is a privately owned trailer weighing less than 2,500 lbs you do not need a plate. If you want to get one, you can get it for $10 and do not need a property tax receipt (since they are not registered you don't get a property tax bill).

So a little trailer like a HF would only need a tag if you used it in a business that crossed state borders.
