Just following up, I ordered a replacement left-side (US Drivers' side) seatbelt for my car, BMW item number 72112996151, and installed it yesterday. I did the whole process with the car switched off, and was NOT given a seat-belt error code when I did eventually start the car.

In the past I mistakenly disconnected a seatbelt wiring harness while the car's power was turned on, and I needed to erase a seatbelt/airbag trouble-code, which was a PITA.

So: keep the car switched off when you're replacing your seatbelt. And thanks once more juld0zer, for giving me good information!
