I found this doc (it's older and I imagine there is a newer one floating around) as well poking around trying to find the differences between Longlife 01 and 04.

I've been using Mobile-1 0w40 LL-01 and will continue doing so since I can get it so much cheaper then the LL-04 from the dealer. I really see no reason to use the LL-04 over the LL-01 and would need to switch to an LL-01 anyway before I could ship my vehicle back to the U.S. I imagine BMW specs LL-04 in Europe so the dealers only have to carry one type of oil even though it's really only needed for the diesels with the DPF.
