Yes. It can be that bad. I had a water issue in my trunk too. Never did find the source of the water but I suspect it was due to something the dealer body shop did. In the end, the dealer covered the repair which turned out to be a shorted out junction box. The symptoms I got was my gauge cluster lighting up like a Christmas tree, a bunch of warnings about a severe malfunction, and the iDrive nav screen going dead along with the gauge cluster. The car was driveable during this time though.
