I went to a retail outlet that stocks the stuff and answered my own question :
Castrol Edge (formerly Syntec) SAE 5w-40 u.s. in the black bottle is API SN and BMW Longlife 01. With the case discount price is on par with the other stuff, it's in Stock, and "BMW recommends Castrol" so I picked some up.
