You can just yank on the vent, instead, without removing the side panel/pressing the tabs, but it seems to me you risk damaging the vent if you do that.
Oh, and IIRC, there are THREE torx screws in step 1 (on the first page here), not two.

Thanks, I'll try it out next week. My fingers are a bit raw from trying to get the vent off.
