The VIN is the easiest tell. If it starts with WBS, 5UM, or 5YM, it was a car built by BMW M. As always, there are oddball historical exceptions, but this is a good rule for cars currently being produced.
BMW M:
WBS
5UM
5YM
Standard BMW:
WBA
5UX
You will find that all the M Performance products have VINs that start with WBA or 5UX.
