I'll confuse you more. I believe the stroke length and damping factor of the B6 & B8 are exactly the same. They only differ in the length of the strut body.
I believe Bilstein is just accommodating the manufacturer's specs. In my Mercedes, the drop is accomplished by the shorter strut body. The reason is the same springs can be used in all models of the vehicle.
I base this on the observation that the fender gap is smaller on the front than the back while the stock configuration the rear gaps are the same and the fronts differ by around 0.5".
Of course, this is all based upon some conjecture.
