Yes.
For instance in Maryland it's 6% of the NADA loan value. If you paid tax on the car in a previous state you get credit for that amount (such as if your previous home state had a 3% tax you would then pay 3% to MD). If the taxes in the previous state were equal or greater than MD you pay a flat fee of a couple hundred dollars. They get their money one way or another...
Kentucky is also 6% but the fee if you've already paid another state 6%+ is less than MD.
After doing some estimating it looks like I'll be writing a check for around $1300 to bring my car back.
