I'm not sure if the N55 turbo is also coolant driven or just oil driven. My guess would be it was leaking/burning both oil and coolant.

Coolant has a lower burning temp, and would start burning off around 250-300 degrees. Oil would start burning off after 350. I figure there was coolant in there, but was burned off to the point where it just had the litre of oil leftover.
