I believe it is now, but that's not the way it started.
All the early 1ers built for Canada (production dates pre Feb 20th) had the "Year one of the 1" starter button (as does mine).
I still suspect that the engraved starter button (in English) ran afoul of Canada's official languages act, which requires bilingual packaging:
"The Act provides that a product must carry bilingual packaging and labelling if said product is
intended to be sold in an area that has a Francophone population of more than 10%. Moreover where
a logo contains the trade mark and the generic name of a product, the description of the product
must appear in both languages."
My guess is that BMW Canada got a polite call from les gendarmes de language and voila, no more offensive English only engraving..
I fully expect BMW Canada to send me a sticky label with "Anee une de la 1" which I can stick under the starter button..
