Ok a bit of an update on progress. So the new setup was still rubbing/catching on the lower leading edge of the inner guard even after bringing in the wheels by 16mm. So a more detailed study of the 1M rear guard edge shows the whole edge being rolled right from the corner where the guard meets the skirt. The 135i has about a 6" edge that is around 15mm wide and then it rolls from there, so this is where it was catching.
So we looked at a number of options and the easiest was to cut/trim this edge off. Problem fixed!! No rubbing/catching and by doing both sides it looks neater than the picture and with wheels fitted not out of place. Picture 1 135i (with damage). Picture 2 1M. Picture 3 solution.
