Just expose a small portion of the sticky side of the tape, and take the plastic backer, and make a "tail" that you can pull out while you have the spoiler on the car. An inch or so will do just fine.

You can have like 4 or 5 tails and once you get the spoiler positioned you hold it down, and pull them out. This exposes the tape and it mates with the car, and you have no chance of misalignment. If you don't like the positioning, you can move it before you pull the tails as its only attached at a few points with very little tape.
