No, it's not true. It has a different windage tray and oil pickup tube, but, the pan itself is the same. BMW used a lot of fancy wording in their academy docs that people misconstrued as meaning things it didn't. If you actually tear down an N54 vs an N55 you'll see both oil pans are the same +/- some small indents. Both pans are shit for performance driving. That's just reality not anecdotal experience of "well I've seen x car blow up." Don't knock the engine though, very few if any street cars have oiling provisions for performance driving. That is why BMW sells the M cars, GM sells track package cars, etc.
